You will remember the old rule about the triangles. Mother drew them on our arms the summer the reservoir went brackish, one pointing up for the dry field and one pointing down for the rain that never came, and she said a pair of them would always find each other in a crowd. I thought that was nonsense until this morning, when the surveyor from the coast towns came up the lane with a satchel full of maps and a solid black triangle inked just below his collarbone, exactly the mirror of yours.

He would not say where he got it. He only kept touching the place where the cursive ran above it, a word his grandmother had written in a language nobody speaks any more, and he kept saying the letters were coming off in the damp. I did not tell him that yours is fading too. So I am going down with him at dawn, and I am taking the other half of the old dye. If the lamp holds, look for the wind on the third ridge. If it doesn't, you will know I found the boats anyway. Bring the ink from under the stair. We never did finish the second line.
