Matching pink flower tattoos on two wrists
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two open hands, palms up, show matching small tattoos of a five-petalled pink flower with a yellow centre and green sepals behind the petals. The bold black outlines and flat fills give the flowers a classic Traditional look, and the two designs sit at the same height on each inner wrist. The dark background keeps the focus on the skin and the colourful ink.

Frost had sealed the yard gate shut by six, and Nell Varley had to kick it open with her good boot. The hens were complaining in the lean-to. Tom was on the phone to the feed merchant in Carlisle, saying the same sentence for the third time, his voice going up at the end like a question nobody wanted to answer.

In the back of the potting shed, behind the sacks of blood and bone, she found the tin. It was the old biscuit kind, lid dented at one corner, and on the lid was a flower printed in faded red: five petals, black lines drawn bold around each one, a yellow eye in the middle and small green cups tucked beneath. Their grandmother had sold seed under that stamp every spring until the year the orchard was grubbed out and the cherries went to the knacker's lorry.
Inside there were no seeds, only a folded sheet in the same looping hand. Cherry, Damson, Bramley, and beside the last one, a question mark pressed so hard the pen had torn the paper. Nell read it twice. Tom came in stamping, cheeks raw from the cold, and she held it out without a word.
He read it standing up, then took the tin and set it on the windowsill where the grey light came in. "The bank wants the land," he said. "It doesn't want the Bramley." Outside, the frost had furred every bare branch of the hedge. Nell filled the kettle and left the list where the glass would keep it cold and dry.
