The story her grandmother told, she said, was that the lotus grows out of the black silt at the bottom of the water, and it never once takes the mud for its own. Each morning it opens clean and pink, and each evening it folds shut and sinks back into the dark, and the next morning it comes up again. Children who wanted to be good were told to be like that. Children who wanted to be clever were told to mind the edge.

Dennis asked whether the seeds still worked after so long. Mrs Okafor cracked one open with her thumbnail and showed him the green heart inside, soft as a fingernail. "They wait," she said. "That is the whole trick of them. They wait until someone puts them in water and remembers what they were for."

He took the tin home in a carrier bag. In March, a patch of shallow water appeared on his allotment where the rain had pooled against the fence, and by June there was a single pink bloom on it, opening each morning before anyone else was up to see it.
