Mags has rung Gino's again, which means the ward will smell of oregano until six. You're at the drug trolley counting morphine with a biro cap between your teeth when the lift opens and the delivery lad comes through the double doors holding the box flat in both hands, like a tray at a wedding. He looks at the ward clock, then at the sign that says QUIET PLEASE, and whispers that the order was for two.

In the box, two slices have slid into one another during the ride up in the lift and fused by their cheese into a lopsided heart, a third slice lying alone in the corner like it's been asked to leave. Mags takes one look and says you're not to photograph it for the staff group chat. You say you wouldn't dream of it. You photograph it anyway, with the flash off, and she pretends not to see.

Later you find the leftover slice in foil at the back of the staff fridge, pressed flat in the middle where you two must have leaned on it, with MAGS written on the foil in marker. You leave it there, and it's still there when the morning shift comes in.
