Matching toast and jam ankle tattoos
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Two ankles are shown side by side, each with a cartoon slice of toast with a smiling face and small stick legs. The left toast has a pink jam centre and the right has a brown spread, both drawn with bold black outlines and flat fills. The plain light background keeps the focus on the two matching tattoos.

The story the lower school told was that a slice shared down the middle keeps two people stuck together, the way jam holds to crust and won't slide off. Ruth had gone to Canada the summer after the exams and sent one postcard, a moose on the front, which Maud still kept in her coat. She cut the loaf on a paper plate, spread the dripping thin, then spooned jam onto the other slice until it bulged at the edges. Nobody at the tables knew why she had brought it.
When the hall had emptied and the urn ticked as it cooled, Maud carried the two plates out to the back step. She pressed the jam slice against the dripping slice, crust to crust, and held them there until the cold came up through the stone. Then she wrapped them in the tea towel, walked across the wet playground to the gate, and stood under the lamp with the parcel warm against her chest, waiting for a bus that was not coming tonight.
