Matching ladybird and heart wrist tattoos

Other · Mixed · Photo

Two wrists show near-identical tattoos, each with a black outlined heart whose tail curls into a spiral, and a small red ladybird with black spots sitting inside the heart. The black linework is smooth and bold rather than fine, and the ladybirds have soft red and black shading. The pair is framed side by side across the lower middle of the photo, with a shoe visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ladybird turned up in a crate of unclaimed gloves on a wet Tuesday in March, tucked inside the cuff of a navy mitten. Dorothy Pask held it under the strip light and found a red bead of nail varnish on the back with seven black spots, one of them smudged where a thumb had gone over it before the paint was dry.

She logged it as found on platform four, then sat with it on her palm through the quiet hour after the 14:20 had gone. The crate held forty pairs of gloves and a single child's wellington. On the inside of the cuff someone had written RUTH in biro, and under that, smaller, a heart with its tail curled back on itself like a fern about to open.

On Friday a woman came to the counter asking after a mitten. She had the other one in her coat pocket, the same grey wool, and when she laid it beside the first, the two ladybirds lined up as if they had been waiting to be introduced. Her sister had painted them the summer they were twelve, she said, one each, so that whichever of them lost a glove the other would know to look. Dorothy slid the pair across the counter and did not ask where the sister was.

When the woman had gone, Dorothy took out a biro and drew a heart on the back of the ticket stub, its tail curling tight at the end. She put a small dot of red in the middle, then sat looking at it until the next train announced itself on the tannoy, muffled and cheerful, as if nothing had been lost at all.
