Cartoon bowl and pizza slice on wrists

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two small cartoon tattoos sit on the inner wrists of two hands held together, one showing a bowl filled with red and white food and the other a slice of pizza. Both characters have simple faces and stick-like arms and legs, drawn with clean dark outlines. Warm reds, oranges and yellows fill the food, with grey and black used for the outlines and bowl, and the background is dark.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dora the chilli bowl had been waiting on the pass since half seven, steam rising off her like she was trying to catch someone's eye. Gus, the pizza slice, slid in beside her on the warm shelf of the Golden Crust, his cheese already stiffening at the edges. "Don't look at me like that," he said. "The lad put me in the wrong box."

Dora had opinions about boxes. She had been ladled into a polystyrene tub that morning and had resented every minute since. The shop was called the Lantern, though nobody had lit a lantern in it since the eighties, and the owner, Mrs Okonedo, kept a radio on the windowsill tuned to the shipping forecast so she always knew when the weather turned. Tonight it had turned. Rain hammered the glass, and the delivery bike outside had its lamp switched off.

Gus had a plan. He had overheard the driver say the Hendersons on Mill Lane had ordered two of everything and then gone to bed. "We go in the same bag," he said. "Nobody sends a pizza without its pudding." Dora pointed out that she was not a pudding. The bag rustled. A torch swung across the counter, and the driver muttered something about grease and wet shoes.

They went out into the rain together, Dora's lid rattling, Gus flapping at the corners. When the door of number fourteen finally opened, a small grey cat looked up from the mat, considered the two of them for a long moment, and turned around without a word, which Gus later decided was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for a slice of pizza.
