Two matching traditional-style colour tattoos of pizza, one a slice with a banner and one a whole pie, on the calves of two people.

Matching pizza tattoos on two calves

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two people's lower legs show matching pizza tattoos. The left calf has a slice with a pepperoni topping and a banner reading "ALWAYS A PIECE OF ME", while the right has a whole pizza cut into segments with a banner reading "YOU COMPLETE". Both use bold black outlines, flat yellow, red and pink fills, and small stars and hearts around them.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

I run the counter at Lucia's on Harbour Row, and on a wet Tuesday in February I watched a lad called Ronan Pike order a large pepperoni, then sit at the window table with it going cold while he kept an eye on the door. He came in every Friday for a year with his sister's boy, always ate one folded slice standing up, and always left the crusts for the gulls. This time he came alone and didn't touch a thing.

At quarter past nine the bell went and Maisie Quill came in shaking rain off a yellow mac. She looked at the box, looked at him, and said, "You're not supposed to wait for me, you great soft article." He said he'd only ordered the whole thing because she always took the last slice and he wanted to see if she'd ask for it. She laughed so hard she had to hold on to the menu board, and two old men at the next table started clapping without knowing why.

They split the pizza on the bench between them, cutting it with the plastic knife I keep for the chilli oil. I saw Ronan slide the last slice across so the best pepperoni landed on her side, and Maisie tore off a corner of her crust and pressed it into his palm. "Always a piece of me," she said, and he said it back to her like a password he'd been practising in the car.

They're still in most Fridays, one slice each, arguing about who finished the chilli oil. I never did ask what the sister's boy thought of any of it. The knife is still in my apron pocket, and the window table is the one I wipe down last.
