Matching crown tattoos on two wrists
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two small crown tattoos sit on the inner wrists of two people, with one wrist shown above the other. Each crown has dark outlines, pink oval gems, and beaded or dotted detailing, with a small heart-shaped charm under the right-hand crown and above the left one. The colour is applied evenly on light skin, and the two designs are placed closely to mirror each other.

The crowns came up in Mr Hosking's crab pot on a Tuesday, tangled in weed, and by Thursday the whole boarding house at Pellow Cove had an opinion about them. Mrs Tregenza said they were tin. Her lodger, a retired organist, said they were gilt brass. The two Penhale girls, who scrubbed the stairs for a penny a flight, said nothing, because they had already decided which one was theirs.

Their mother had told them the old tale plainly, the way she told everything: the sea keeps a queen's crown in two halves, and whoever wears one half must find the one who wears the other, or the tide will come for them at the next spring. Ada laughed. Nell did not. She took the smaller crown to the scullery, rubbed its pink stones with salt until they shone like boiled sweets, and pressed a little iron heart from the stove door onto its band with a hairpin.
Ada fastened the larger one round her wrist with a length of ribbon, and it fitted as though someone had measured her in the night. For a month nothing happened, except that the pilchards came in thick and the organist took up whistling hymns on the back step. Then in March a stranger came up from the harbour with a cough and a sea-chest, asked for a room facing west, and when Nell passed him the bread he looked at her wrist and went very still.
He held out his own arm. Under the cuff was the twin of Ada's crown, with a heart hanging beneath it like a drop of rain. Nell saw what Ada had not wanted to see: the tide had been bringing the halves home one at a time. By the next spring tide the three of them stood on the shingle with their wrists together, and the water went out and did not come back for anyone. Afterwards the crowns sat side by side on the scullery sill, hearts touching, and the salt dried white around them.
