Matching pizza slice tattoos on two ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet rest side by side, each with a small pizza slice tattoo on the outer ankle. The slices are drawn in thin black outline with circles for pepperoni and a crust along the wide edge. The ink is black only, with the pale skin and dark wooden floor framing the pair.

Nobody on Harrow Lane believed the story about the slice, so Dess drew it on a napkin to prove it. The Bella Notte on Cardigan Street had closed at eleven, but Sal, who owned it and owed my brother money, left the oven warm for us anyway, and we sat on the prep counter with a single margherita between us, the cheese already set into a grey map of the Pennines.

We had agreed, the way people agree things at two in the morning, that the only fair thing was to split it exactly. Dess cut with a bread knife and a ruler from the drawer by the till. She took the wider wedge because she had measured first, and I got the thinner one with the better crust, which I pointed out, loudly, was a crime against crust. The argument carried on until the pepperoni ran out and we were both laughing too hard to hold the knife.
The idea came from Sal's cousin, who had a shop across the river where everything was done with a needle and a steady hand. We went the next Saturday. The man at the desk asked what we wanted, Dess said a slice, he said of what, and we both said pizza at once, which made the sort of silence only two people awake since Thursday can produce.
I still think about the napkin. Dess kept it folded in her purse for years, creased where the sauce had soaked through, and whenever she paid for lunch she slid it out, just to check we had not forgotten which half was whose.
