Two small matching-style tattoos on feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet touch on a floral fabric background, each with a small tattoo. The left tattoo is a dark scrolled motif that resembles a bird or stylised shape, drawn with fine outlines and curled interior details. The right tattoo is a shield-shaped design in grey tones with stippled dot shading. The photograph has a warm, vintage-style filter and the ink is black and grey.

Dear Ada, the Saturday dance at the Palais has been cancelled twice now because the bandleader's trumpet is in pawn, so the whole of Hollins Street is sulking. I went anyway and stood by the cloakroom with my shoes on the wrong feet. Mr Greaves asked after you, and I told him you had gone to Canada to marry a man who sells pianos.

He gave me something in return: a little tin shield, dotted all over with punched holes, the sort the cloakroom girls used for coat checks. He said it was the last one left from the old Tuesday hop, when the floor used to bounce under our feet. I have stitched it into the lining of my good coat, where it knocks against my hip like a second heart.
Your bird is still at the bottom of my jewellery box, the scrolled wren we cut from the back of a cigarette packet in the wash house. I keep meaning to throw it out and never do. Last night I took it out and turned it over and found your initials pencilled on the back in that careful hand you had at school, which I had quite forgotten.
Write back soon, and send me a photograph of the sea if they have one in Halifax. I will wear the shield to the next dance, whenever the trumpet comes out of pawn, and I will think of you somewhere with a piano and a man who knows the steps. Yours, Bet.
