Matching poppy tattoos on two wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two small poppy tattoos sit on the inner wrists of two people whose hands are held together. The left flower has delicate black linework for the stem and bud outline, with soft red and coral petals. The right tattoo is fainter and more diffused, and its stem is barely visible against the skin. The plain dark green background keeps the focus on the wrists.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed merchant from Kendal had sent the wrong packet again, so Brother Anselm spent the morning at the scullery table sorting poppy seed from grit, tipping the black dust into a saucer and blowing the chaff onto the flagstones. Tobias sat on the bench opposite with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, pretending he was not waiting for the bell. He had come up from the mill towns in March with a cardboard case and a cough that the infirmarian said would pass with the warmer weeks. It had not passed yet.

"I'm going at Michaelmas," Tobias said at last. "My mother has put my name down at the works in Leeds. There's a room over the chemist's."

Anselm did not look up. He folded a twist of paper around a pinch of seed and pressed it into the boy's palm, then closed the fingers over it with his own hand, which smelt of linseed and wet wool. "Poppies don't come up in cold ground unless you press them in and leave them alone," he said. "They look dead for a year. Then they come up where you forgot them."

Tobias planted the seed in the strip of earth under the south wall before he left, pressing the soil flat with the heel of his thumb, and wrote nothing about it in his letters. In May, a single bloom opened there, thin and red as a cut, its bud still wrapped in a green hood. Anselm sent word to Leeds with a pressed petal folded inside a card. It arrived faded to the colour of weak tea, and Tobias held it against the inside of his wrist for a long while before he put it in his pocket.
