Matching crossed fingers tattoos on upper arms

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching tattoos of a hand with the index and middle fingers crossed, drawn in thin black outline. Small four-pointed sparkle marks sit beside each hand, and the two arms are pressed together against a plain light background. The ink is black only, with no shading, and the open skin tone keeps the lines crisp.

Brother Aldous had been told the psalter would be finished by Lady Day, and he had said yes with his right hand pressed flat against the vellum, the left tucked behind his back where the abbot could not see it. Two fingers crossed, the way his mother had taught him in the Lincolnshire fens when she wanted him to believe a thing she did not quite believe herself. It was not a lie, he told himself. It was a hope with its fingers crossed for luck.

The gold leaf would not lie flat in the damp. Each morning he breathed on the page, laid the thin sheets down, and each morning they curled like burnt paper. Brother Osric, who ground the lapis and complained about everything, said the cloister had been cursed since the old prior died. Aldous said nothing. He only dotted tiny four-pointed stars in the margin beside the initial letters, the way the old scribes did when they wanted God to see their work and forgive the mistakes.

On the eve of the feast the abbot climbed the stair with his lantern and stopped at the desk. He studied the page for a long time. Then he lifted his own hand, and Aldous saw with a jolt that the abbot's first two fingers were crossed too, pressed tight against each other like a secret.

"The gold will hold by morning," the abbot said. "I have prayed on it."

Aldous went back to his stool, unfolded his hands, and for the first time that winter the leaf stayed flat under his brush.
