Matching script and heart finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest one over the other on a green marbled surface. One ring finger carries fine line script that wraps around the finger and is only partly visible, and the other ring finger carries a small heart with an interlocking loop outline. Both tattoos are in dark, near black ink, and the close framing keeps the focus on the two finger designs.

The hazel wand came out of the wood at Hollin Edge the spring the old miller's boy went missing, and nobody in Crake Lowe would cut it for him. Mother Sedge said a withy that grows into its own loop has no start and no end, and such a thing belongs to the trees, not to a man with a knife.

Thomas Ruddock cut it anyway, on a Tuesday, in the frost, and carried it down to the smithy at the bottom of the lane. Ada Fenn, who kept the bellows and the bees, watched him split the wand and bend each half round a finger's width. She did not ask whose fingers they were. She pressed a small heart into the wood with a hot nail, then wound a thread of her own hair through the gap so the two halves would not sit apart.
They were wed at the chapel stile the week the blackthorn came out. The rings stayed on through threshing and two hard winters, and the wood darkened the way oak does, until nobody in the village could tell the heart from the knot.
When Ruddock was laid in the churchyard, Ada took his ring off and set it on the windowsill beside her own, two dark loops touching at the edge. A fox came down the lane each night and sat looking at them until the candle guttered. In the morning they were still there, and neither one had a start or an end.
