The big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and I'm writing from the back of the lorry with the canvas still smelling of rain. Ma Ruth stood at the centre pole with her clipboard and didn't cry, which frightened me more than crying would have. She said the same two words she always says before a high wire, then went off to count the tent pegs one more time.

You'll remember the sign. I painted the Harrowgate Bros lettering on the side wagon in 1961, and the gold has held better than the company did. Last week I went over the scrolls with my fine brush and found the paint had lifted on the final R. I left it. Some things ought to show their age.

The lads are signing on with a bigger outfit near Leeds, the one with a proper hall and heated dressing rooms. Ruth won't go. She says she sold the ponies and kept her nerve, and a nerve is all a woman needs to walk a wire. I offered her my savings and she laughed and called me soft.

So I'm sending you the good sable brushes and the tin of Prussian blue. Don't let them dry out. If you ever paint a sign again, paint it as though the whole town will read it twice. And if you find Ruth in the bread queue next winter, tell her the R held.
