The queen had gone missing from the set in the autumn, so Mr Oduya wrapped the bishop in tissue and told me to keep the pieces he had left in the velvet tray until the next Thursday. I was twelve, and the tray smelled of pipe smoke and lemon oil. He said a board with a missing piece was like a sentence with a missing word: you could still read it, but you knew somebody had been careless.

We played on the back table of the rowing club, under a window that rattled whenever the ferry came in. He never let me win. He let me lose slowly, which he said was the only honest way to teach. The black king sat on the windowsill between games, its small crown worn smooth on one side, and he would turn it in his fingers while he thought.
When he died, the club gave me the tray. Inside, folded into the lining, was the missing queen, which must have dropped from his coat pocket the day it went missing. Beneath her base was a note in his square capitals: CHECKMATE IS NOT THE END OF THE GAME.
I took the set home and laid it out on my kitchen table. On the Thursday I sat across from the empty chair, turned the black king a quarter turn in my fingers, and moved my first pawn.
