Small bow tattoo on a finger
Hand · Colour · Photo
A small bow tattoo sits on the middle finger of a hand whose fingers are crossed over one another. The bow has a dark outline, a red fill and a red dot at its centre, with simple solid shading. The background is dark and blurred, and the warm, slightly vignetted frame gives the photo a retro look.

The ribbon was still warm from the iron when Nell knotted it round her middle finger, then crossed that finger over the next one, the way her mam did at the chapel gate. Tom would be on the cage at half five. Ten hours down the Ashgrove Drift, she told herself, and she would not spend one of them counting.

She counted anyway. She counted the tubs that rattled past the kitchen window and the trams that rang along the bottom road, and at the end of each count she drew the bow again on the back of her hand with a nib dipped in the red ink from the chemist's bottle, pressing until the colour sat in the lines like a stamp.
The whistle went at quarter to seven. Mrs Dunn ran out into the lane with her apron over her face, and the women of Pelton Row stood at their doors in a line, nobody speaking. Nell kept her fingers crossed until the men came up the hill. When Tom came last, black to the eyes and limping, she uncrossed them slowly, one finger at a time, and let him see the bow was still there.
'You daft article,' he said, and took her hand, and she felt the ink rub against his thumb. He didn't ask what the ribbon was for. He untied nothing. He just held on.
