Two hands held together, each with a thin black fine line tattoo of a looping wave wrapped around the base of a finger.

Matching fine line wave tattoos on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are interlocked, and each of two fingers carries a thin black tattoo in a continuous looping wave or scroll line that wraps partly around the finger. The linework is fine and even, with small loops at the centre of each design, and the two pieces appear to match. The ink is solid black against the skin, and the background is dark, which keeps the focus on the tattoos.

Sit yourself down on that crate, and mind the lid of the stockpot, it's been simmering since Lisbon. You want the tale of the two deckhands from the Marigold? Right, I'll tell it while I chop these onions, and you can keep your eyes on the bread.

Tomas and Ellery were the youngest on the coaster, and they were thick as thieves from the first day out of Falmouth. Shore leave that spring, they walked into a back room with a lamp and a bottle of ink and came out with a wave each, one on the second finger of every hand. Ellery's curled to the left and Tomas's to the right, so when they clasped hands in the wheelhouse the two swells met between their knuckles and made a single sea. The skipper called them daft. The cook, which was me, called them sensible, because nobody argues with a sea.

Then the Rotterdam tanker offered Tomas a berth with twice the wage, and he took it. They stood on the quay at dawn with the gulls going mad over the fish boxes, and neither of them said much. Tomas just tapped the wave on Ellery's finger with his thumb, once, the way you'd touch a barometer for luck.

Ellery still has the galley. Every morning he hooks that finger over the kettle handle to lift it, and the curl catches the lamplight. Whichever way a wave runs, lad, it always comes round to the same shore. Now mind that onion, it's making you cry.
