Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A thin black infinity symbol wraps across the top of a foot, with the words Faith, Love and Hope written along its loops in script lettering. A grey shaded feather runs through the centre of the infinity loop, with small red hearts or dots beside it and near the word Hope. The image is set against a plain white background with the toes visible at the lower edge.

Sit nearer, the lot of you, and mind the wasps at the windfalls. This was late August, the year the Cox's came in early, and old Ada Pell went out into the Long Rows with two baskets, because the vicar's boy had told her rain was coming and she did not believe a word of it.

The lane ran round the orchard like a figure of eight laid on its side, out past the hives, back by the wire gate, and round again, so a body could walk for an hour and never be lost. Ada walked it. At the gate she found a grey feather snagged on the barbs, long and soft as a letter nobody sent, and she tucked it in her apron. Halfway round the loop she found a hazel shell, then a sock she had lost in March, then a red haw berry with a bite out of it. Each thing she had mislaid, the orchard had kept for her, and she told it so, out loud, the way you would scold a dog.

On the third turn the wind got up and the feather lifted out of her apron as if it had somewhere to be. Ada chased it down the rows, past the old Bramley that had split in the frost, and it stopped at last on the highest bough of the youngest tree, caught among three small apples, each one red as a thumbprint of ink. She could not reach. She stood under it a long while, deciding whether she was too old to climb, and then decided she was not too old to wait.

Come evening the rain did arrive, as the boy had said, and it found her still standing there with both baskets empty. In the morning the feather lay on the grass by the gate, dry as a page, and the top apple had gone. Ada never said who took it. She only said that a loop was a kind of promise, if you kept walking it.
