The ferry at Hollin Ford had never carried more than three people at a time, so Maud Tarrant cut her tallies in threes. Three strokes on the oak post for each crossing, and a bar through every third one for the ledger. Her father had taught her that the river did not care for arithmetic, only for who waited on the far bank when the mist came down.

One November evening a stranger stepped out of the reeds with a sack on his shoulder and asked for passage. He had four copper coins, all worn to the same dull shine, and he laid them on the gunwale one at a time. Maud counted them, then counted again. Her father's rule was one coin for a body, and the rest for the boat. But the stranger only smiled and said he wanted four strokes cut on the post tonight, so the wood would remember him.

She poled him out through the grey water. Halfway across he hummed a tune she half knew from her grandmother, and the current went quiet under the hull as if it were listening. On the far stones he shook out his sack, and it was empty. He thanked her and walked up the lane, and Maud watched the cottage lamps come on one by one, a fourth among them where there had never been a fourth before.

Back at the post she cut the long fourth stroke, then sat with the knife across her knees. Three strokes were for people who crossed and came home again. Four, she decided, were for everyone else.
