Mrs Pargeter wrote the room numbers in pencil on the back of each door, but she kept the keys on a board by the scullery, and nobody was allowed to take the wrong one. You arrived on a Tuesday with the rain coming sideways off the harbour wall, and she held out a key on a loop of green string and told you it belonged to the little room over the bins, the only one with a view of the sea.

The house had three landings and a lodger on each, and by the second week you had learned its rhythm. The retired signalman on the first floor coughed at six. The two sisters who sold shell pictures on the pier argued through the wall every afternoon. Each evening, as the tide turned, the boards in the hall gave three slow creaks, as if someone were counting out change.

On the ninth night you found a drawer in the chest left half open, and inside it three small black stones, the sort a child collects from the shingle and then forgets. Pressed into the dust beside them was the faint outline of a triangle. You turned the stones over in your palm, cold and smooth, and wondered which lodger had kept them for luck, and whether that lodger had ever gone home.

In the morning you put them back exactly where they had been and went down to ask Mrs Pargeter. She only laughed and said the house always kept three of something: three keys, three names on the rota, three stones for three people who meant to return. Then she handed you the green string again and said your room was ready. You stayed on past the end of the month.
