Crescent moon and circle on two feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet rest side by side on a soft beige surface. A small crescent moon outline sits on the upper foot near the ankle, and a small open circle sits on the lower foot, both in thin black linework. The shading is minimal and the tattoos are simple, with a warm, close-up composition.

The moon had slipped into the water butt again, so Nan Harrow sent the two girls down the garden with a lantern before the frost came. Tamsin went first on the cold brick path, and Edie came behind with the light held too close to her skirt. The moon was only a thin white bow that night, floating among the bean leaves in the rainwater, and it would not climb out whatever they called to it.

Nan came down with her shears still in her hand and looked into the butt a long while. The moon was not lost, she said, only shy of being seen whole, and it would stay a sliver until somebody gave it something round to keep. Tamsin ran to the kitchen and came back with the lid of the bread crock. Edie knelt by the gate, pressed her finger into the wet soil and drew a ring, pale at the edges where the frost was starting.
The crescent rose from the water that night and hung itself over the ring, the way a thumbnail sits over a coin. Nan said it would go on that way, thinning and filling, always coming back to the ring it had been promised. The girls grew up and left the village, and each of them came home every winter to stand at the gate and look. Where the crock lid had been, the ring is still scratched in the earth, and the moon still climbs out of the water butt on the nights it is shy.
