Moon phases in a row on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm shows five small black moon phase symbols, from a thin crescent near the wrist through half-lit and fully filled circles to a crescent at the elbow end. The shapes are solid black fills with clean edges and no visible shading or gradient. The skin is pale and the background is dark plastic sheeting with a red bracelet at the wrist, giving a simple, evenly spaced composition.

The ewes had been lambing since before the frost broke, and Marta had not slept more than three hours together in a week. She walked the top field each night with a torch in her teeth and a bucket in one hand, counting heads against the stars. The moon was the only thing on the farm that kept its shape. Her grandfather used to say it went through its trouble in a fixed order, thin as a fingernail, then a half, then the full round thing that made the dogs howl, then back down the same steps to nothing at all.

On the fifth night a ewe went down in the far corner by the hawthorn and would not get up. Marta knelt in the wet grass with the lamb's slick legs in her hands and worked until her fingers stopped feeling like hers. When the small body finally slid free and began to breathe, she looked up and saw the moon had slipped behind the ridge, leaving only a sliver over the barn roof, a thin bright blade the colour of milk.
She carried the lamb back under her coat and set it by the stove. Her grandfather's notebook sat on the shelf where it always had, its cover soft with handling. Beside the last entry, in his square capitals, he had drawn the phases in a row, five small shapes running across the page. Marta traced them with her cold thumb, the way you read a map you already know by heart, and went to find the bottle.
