Matching shamrock tattoos on three wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three arms are pressed together at the wrists, each bearing a small outlined shamrock with three heart-shaped leaves and a single stem. The linework is thin, even and unshaded, in black ink. The photograph is black and white and shows a paved outdoor surface with shadows behind the hands.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The three of them had agreed on the bridge at Kellock Street, where the lamps hummed and the river smelled of coal and cold stone. Nobody remembered who had first said that clover grows in threes only when the ground is kind enough to let it. Mairead said it was her grandmother's saying. Tomas said it was on a biscuit tin. They argued until the night baker shut his shutters across the road, and then they stopped arguing and simply held out their wrists.

The tattooist worked in a back room above a shoe repairer's, under a single bulb that swung whenever a bus went past below. She inked the first shamrock on Mairead's left wrist, then Tomas's, then the third on the small wrist that belonged to Oona, who had come late and paid for it with coppers counted onto the table. Each leaf was a single line, round at the top and pinched at the centre, with one long stem curling down toward the thumb. She used no shading at all. She said a clover needs nothing to hide behind.

When they walked out, the streets had gone blue and empty. They pressed their wrists together under the lamp outside the bakery, the way they had seen sailors do on the quay, and the three small plants lined up in the cold light like a promise nobody had to say aloud. A cat watched them from the bins. Mairead said the ground must be kind here after all. Oona laughed and told her to stop being so pleased with herself, and they went home by different roads, each of them turning once at the corner to check the other two were still walking.
