Matching linked heart outlines on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two identical small tattoos of overlapping heart outlines appear on two inner wrists, with one pair of hands held together. The thin, single-weight black linework is even and crisp, with no shading or fill inside the hearts. The ink is dark against pale skin, and the close framing keeps the tattoos centred with a teal sleeve and a silver bracelet at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ruth, The lock at Hatton has taken another paint tin since you left, and Dad still swears it was the same one. I have the Kestrel moored below the chandlery where the willows dip low enough to brush the roof, and the kettle has learned to sing before I fill it. Mrs Okafor sold me a new reel of cotton yesterday, grey as dishwater, which is what you get for shopping on a Sunday.

I kept thinking about the hearts we drew on the back of the lock gate that summer, the two of them looping through each other because neither of us would let the other have the whole thing. You said outlines were the only honest way to draw a heart, that colour just makes a promise you have to keep painting. So I went to the boatyard man in Braunston, who keeps his tools in a Quality Street tin, and asked him to copy them exactly, thin and black, no shading. He did it in one sitting while the rain came sideways off the cut. It took less time than the tea.

The wind has turned, so the water is running backwards past the mooring rings. Dad says that means rain by Thursday. I will be here when it comes. When the cut is high enough, take the train north, walk the towpath with your bag over one shoulder, and find the boat with the willow on the roof. We will see whether the two hearts still fit together the way they used to.
