Four playing card suit tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four arms meet at the centre of the frame, with one small tattoo on each wrist. The designs are a diamond outline, a solid club, a solid spade and a heart outline, drawn in simple, clean black linework and fills. The monochrome photograph has soft lighting and a plain dark background that keeps focus on the tiny designs.

Aunt Maud dealt the last hand of the summer under the apple tree, because the kitchen table had been claimed by wasps and the bench was still wet from the hose. Four of us sat on upturned crates in the long grass, knees almost touching, while the cards went soft at the corners from too much handling.

Dinah had the diamond, a single bright card she kept turning face down with one finger, as though it might change its mind if she left it alone. Ruth held the clubs and called them the only honest suit, because they looked to her like clover pressed flat in a missal. Ben, who never played well and never minded, had the spades, and he kept fanning them into a neat arc and breaking it apart again just to hear the snap.
Maud wasn't looking at her cards. She was watching the bees work the lavender by the shed wall, and she said the trick was never about winning, only about who could keep a hand steady long enough for the others to reach across. So we did. Four arms came in over the middle of the crate, wrists turned up, fingers hooked together like the spokes of a cart wheel, and for a moment nobody played at all.
Then Ben dropped the ace of hearts into the centre of us, a wasp settled on it, and Maud laughed so hard she had to lie back in the grass. Nobody took the trick. We let the wasp have it.
