Matching sister quote and interlocking hearts
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two photographs show matching black tattoos of interlocking outline hearts with script lettering. The left one sits on the inner forearm near the wrist and reads a quote about a friend and sister, while the right one sits on the ankle with a related line about sisterhood. The ink is solid black with clean, medium-weight outlines and no shading or colour, and each photo is framed closely on the tattoo.

The kettle has boiled twice while you stand at the back door, pretending the fog over the dyke is the only thing worth watching. Behind you Nell is in the front room, swearing at the zip of her good coat. The taxi will be early. Everything in this town is early when it is leaving.

Dad cut the hearts from an old biscuit tin the winter you were nine, with the snips he used on the eel traps, and bent them so they hooked together like links in a chain. One for each of you. 'Keep that on you,' he said, 'and you'll never be further apart than the length of a string.' You lost yours down a drain outside the chapel. Nell kept hers in a matchbox for twenty years and took it out only when she thought you were asleep.
The horn sounds from the lane. Nell comes through the kitchen with her case knocking the table legs, and stops, and looks at the hook by the door where the two tin hearts have hung since Dad died. The one you kept has gone brown at the edges. She lifts her own from her coat pocket, unhooks it from the thread, and clips it back beside yours so they link again.
'Half a heart is no use to anyone,' she says. You tell her she sounds like Dad. She says that's the idea. Then the horn goes again, and you walk her out into the fog with the two of them swinging softly behind the door, still hooked.
