Four-panel script quote tattoo on a foot
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
The image is a four-panel collage, each panel showing a line of black script lettering on the sole of a foot, reading in sequence Together forever, Never apart, Maybe in distance and but never in heart. The linework is fine and fluid, with some letters joined by flourishes and ellipses trailing after the first three phrases. A small solid red heart sits beside the final phrase, and the rest of the ink is black on pale skin against a dark background.

Dear Nell, the proving cabinet has been groaning since four and I have flour up to my elbows, so forgive the smudges. Mr Okonedo finally had the new mixer back from the menders, all shiny and smelling of solder, and it hums now like a cat that has been told off. The lads on the early shift say I talk to it. I do not talk to it. I only tell it what I think of it.

Your last card came with the Bristol postmark and I have it pinned above the bench beside the rota. You wrote that you had started a job on the far side of the water and that the rent was a robbery. You also wrote that we would be together forever, which made me laugh out loud in front of a tray of bagels. Then you signed off with something about never being apart, and I thought, well, that's Nell making promises the weather can't keep.
Here is the truth, though, and I'll say it before the oven timer shouts. Last night I walked down to the harbour wall and counted the lights on the far shore, and I could not make myself be cross about it. Maybe in distance, I thought, is a fair way to put it. Maybe. But never in heart. Flour dust in my throat, I stood there grinning like a fool.
Bread's out. Come home at Christmas and I'll save you the heel of the rye, the one you always stole.
Love, Mags
