Matching infinity heart tattoos reading Sisters
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Two legs are shown side by side, each with a matching tattoo of a thin black infinity symbol, a shaded red heart and the word Sisters in black script. The linework is fine and even, while the heart has soft red shading with a small highlight. The ankles sit close together against a dark leather surface, with one foot wearing a black strappy sandal.

Our mam said the sign on its side was a jeweller's lie, that nothing in Horden went on forever except the rent and the dust at the back of your throat. Bess didn't believe her. She had a pencil out at the kitchen table before the kettle boiled, tracing a figure of eight over the Coal Board envelope until the paper went soft and grey under her thumb.

Ruth took the dock shift at Wearmouth that spring, the one with cold tea in a flask and a cage that rattled like loose teeth. I was sixteen and working nights at the bakery on Front Street, so we were never in the same room awake. We kept the house going with notes pushed under the bedroom door: a heart drawn in biro, a word spelled wrong on purpose so the other had something to correct.
The week after the roof fall at the drift, Ruth came home with a bandage round her hand and a face like unbaked bread. She said the men had been good to her, that a fellow called Teasdale had carried her up the bank. Bess went to an ink parlour in Seaham on the Saturday with the envelope folded in her coat. The artist there had stonemason's hands and asked nothing. He drew the loop, the heart and the word, and said it would sting less than the pit did.
We sat on the back step that evening with our feet together on the cold stone, two small red hearts going nowhere in particular. Mam shouted from inside that we'd catch our deaths. Ruth laughed and said the figure of eight had been right all along, because you could follow it round and round and still end up beside the person you started with.
