Matching sisters heart and wing wrist tattoos
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two wrists placed side by side, each with a matching tattoo of an outlined heart with a small wing or bird shape beside it and the word Sisters written in cursive script. The linework is bold and even, in black ink with grey tones where the ink has softened, and the design sits at the centre of each wrist against a plain background. Each wrist wears a thin bracelet with an infinity symbol, one purple and one white, which are not part of the tattoos.

Dear Bea, The Sallow has come up three feet since Tuesday and the lock-keeper at Pellow says nothing moves until it drops, so I am tied up under the willows with the kettle on and nothing to do but write. Your postcard from Kilnsey came yesterday. I have pinned it above the stove beside Dad's old tide table. The gull on the front looks just like the one that stole my sandwich at Ferrybridge, so I have decided it is following us.

The barge is smaller without you. I keep reaching for the second mooring rope and finding only the wet coil you always left on the wrong side. Last night I sat with the tin of buttons on the chart table and thought about that afternoon in the little studio in Hull, when we argued for an hour over the lettering. The artist drew the heart first, then the small bird tucked against it, and said a sister wants a bird because a bird always comes back to the same branch. You said that was daft. You were crying by the time he finished the second wrist.
The water should drop by Friday, the lock-keeper reckons. I will leave the bow line slack and the kettle warm. If the gates open, you will find me at the top lock with the purple cord on my wrist, the one you tied for me, and the white one I am still not sure suits me. Come anyway. Nothing on this river has ever got past a lock without two pairs of hands on the windlass.
Love, Nell
