Clef heart tattoos on wrist and ankle
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos show a treble clef and a bass clef interlocked to form a heart, with small dots beside the bass clef. The linework is solid black with no shading or colour, and the left design sits on the inner wrist while the right sits on the ankle, both photographed against a dark background with warm light.

In the winter the organ at St Brannock's went quiet. The bellows split like a dry loaf, and the vicar sent for the Pardoe sisters because nobody else in Hollin Dale could read a score. Ida took the bass and Nell the treble, the way they had always sung, one low and one high, so that between them they made a sound the old women said you could hear from the lane.

That spring Nell had a letter from Leeds offering her a place at the wireless works. She packed her good shoes and the pencil stub she kept behind one ear. Ida walked her down to the halt at Stone Gate. They did not embrace. Ida drew two marks on the back of a hymn sheet, a curl for the treble and a bass clef with its two dots, and folded it into Nell's glove. "Keep the tune going," she said, and the train took her out past the sheep.
The organ was Ida's after that. She packed the split bellows with tallow cloth and learned the stops by touch. On the first Sunday of April the congregation heard a bass line so full that dust came down from the rafters. Afterwards the vicar asked where the second voice had gone. Ida only said that some parts keep their own time.
On the first Sunday of every month, at the hour the organ started, a letter came from Leeds with one word inside it: Here. Ida read it, folded it small, and played the hymn through with the treble left empty, leaving a gap in the chord just wide enough for an answer.
