Matching sisters swing tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists show a matching pair of tattoos. Each has the word Sisters in cursive script with the numbers 92 95 beneath, next to a simple outlined figure of a person seated on a swing. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or colour, and the two designs are placed side by side across the photo.

Eleven days out of Immingham, the bosun found the swing in the forward store, folded under a tarpaulin like something nobody wanted to be asked about. It was a child's seat on two lengths of manila, and someone had scratched a pair of numbers into the wood beside the eye splice: 92 and 95, the years the two ships were laid down on the same slip.

Nobody aboard the Ardent Mary could say who had put it there. The older hands claimed the yard men used to hang a seat from the gantry for their children on Sundays, and that the sister ships had been named for the girls who came to watch them launch. I thought of my own sister in Grimsby, who writes to me every Thursday on paper that smells of fish and lemon soap, and who has never once let me win an argument about who went first down the slide.
On the twelfth night the wireless man came aft with word that the Brisk Hope had lost steerage in a squall off the Bay and was limping for Vigo. I sat on the swing in the storeroom with the lamp swinging overhead, and through the bulkhead I could hear her horn answering ours across the dark water. Two notes, one lower. I pushed off with my heels, the way Nell used to shout at me to do, and the rope creaked against the beam.
We raised Vigo by morning. Nothing had broken that a welder couldn't mend. When I wrote to Nell from the quay I did not mention the swing. I said the sea had been kind, that I had found something of ours in a locker, and asked her to keep the rope tight until I got home.
