Matching infinity and arrow wrist tattoos
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists show matching tattoos of an infinity loop crossed by an arrow, with the letters R and K beside the arrow shaft. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The tattoo on the left is larger than the one on the right, set against plain skin in soft natural light.

The man at the fairground booth in Market Harrow says the loop will be the hardest part, so Kit insists on watching him draw it twice in biro before anyone's name goes under the needle. Behind the trestle the Ferris wheel stalls and starts again, and the bulbs along the Co-op awning flicker as if they are thinking better of it. You pretend not to care whether the arrow points up or down. You care very much.

Kit's father has a rail job in Peterborough, and the letter comes on a Tuesday, two lines in a hand that leans backwards as if it wants out of the room. Kit leaves on the Thursday train with a suitcase, a flask and one of the two identical drawings folded into a wallet. You stand on the platform until the steam thins into the cold, then walk home counting lampposts, because you promised yourself you would not cry in front of the porter.
The first postcard arrives in March with a looping figure sketched in the corner and no words at all, only the letters R and K set beside a feathered shaft. You pin it above the kettle. Each week another card follows, each one softer at the edges, as though a dozen strangers have handled it on the way to you.
In June a telegram comes instead, four words long, and you read it standing by the post box with your heart going like a bad engine. COMING HOME STOP ARROW STILL TRUE STOP. You turn the form over looking for anything more and find only the back of it, blank as a field after harvest.
