Matching sisters wrist tattoos with swing
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a matching black line tattoo. Each design pairs the word Sisters in cursive script with the numbers 92 95 and a line drawing of a girl on a swing, one drawn as a mirror image of the other. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink on pale skin, and the designs are centred on each wrist.

Tess had the hall keys in her coat pocket, which was the only reason she had been handed the clipboard at the door. The name badges were the sticky sort, and half the year had written their maiden names in capitals before crossing them out. Behind her a trestle table held a sponge under cling film and a jug of squash going warm in the heat from the urn.

Mags arrived late, as she always had, with her hair scraped up and a cardigan bought for a funeral. She did not look for Tess first. She went straight to the corkboard where the old school photographs were pinned and found the one from the field behind the mobile classroom: two girls on the swings, legs stretched out, chains twisted tight. 'You kept that,' she said. 'Mum binned everything else,' said Tess, and that was the whole of the conversation for a while.
The numbers had been theirs for years. 92 was the summer Mags learned to go higher than the frame, and 95 was the autumn Tess finally got the wobbly seat to herself. Nobody else in the hall knew that, which was rather the point. Mags took a biro from the table, wrote 92 95 on the back of her badge, and held it up like a ticket.
When the speeches started they slipped out through the fire door and across the tarmac to the old playground, where the swings were still bolted to the same frame, painted a different green. Mags sat in the left seat and Tess took the right. Neither of them pushed off at first. Then the chains took their weight and the first creak came, the exact note it had always made, and they went up together, and for a few seconds the car park and the music and the years in between simply fell away.
