Matching small anchor tattoos on heels

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small anchor tattoos sit on the heels of two bare feet, shown side by side on a carpeted floor. Each anchor is a simple black outline with solid filled details, drawn in clean, minimal linework. The left foot also carries a larger dark ornamental band on the ankle with a chain-like pattern and a wheel or star motif, while the right foot wears woven bracelets. The image is composed in a close, straight-on view with a soft, neutral palette.

The harbour school reunion was held in the old net loft, and nobody had thought to bring a map. Marjorie Pell arrived with a tin of shortbread and a pair of sandals she had bought for her daughter's wedding, and she found Ida Croft already at the trestle table, pressing a finger to a name badge that had come unstuck.

"You still owe me a ferry ticket," Ida said. "Nineteen fifty-nine. Sixpence."

"I paid you in sea glass."

"You paid me in promises."

They had sworn at fourteen, under the pier, that whoever washed up on the wrong side of the bay first would wait on the stone steps with a ship's wheel drawn on a ribbon. Neither had ever learned to draw a wheel. So instead they had pricked small anchors with a darning needle and a thimble of Indian ink, and the marks had gone grey and then faded to a shadow that only showed when the tide was out.

Later, when the band packed up and the lights went down, Ida slipped off her shoe and turned to the lamplight. Marjorie did the same. The two anchors sat side by side, a little crooked, a little older than either of them. Ida said the sea had kept its side of the bargain. Marjorie said it had only been waiting for them to sit still long enough to notice.
