Small outline hearts on three ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Three people stand side by side with their bare feet and ankles in view, each with a small heart outlined in thin black linework. The hearts are simple, unshaded and similar in size, sitting just above the inner ankle bone. The toenails are painted pink, pink and teal against a blue-grey speckled ground, and the lighting is bright daylight.

You are sweeping the chandlery floor when Mrs Ashdown tells you the tide is turning and the brothers are not coming in on it. She keeps the brass stamp in the drawer under the till, the one with a small heart cut into its face, and she has never let you touch it. Today she lifts it out, presses it into the blue ink pad, and tells you to bring the harbour ledger to the quay.

The quay is slick with fog and smells of diesel and wet rope. You open the ledger on an upturned crate and find the three boats listed in her careful hand: the Ada May, the Rose Hannah, the Lizzie. Mrs Ashdown wants a heart beside each name, small enough to fit in the margin, so the men will know the office has counted them. You stamp the first one, then the second, and the ink comes up crisp and even. Your hand is shaking by the third.
The lamp on the breakwater comes on early. Gulls wheel over the empty moorings, and a bell somewhere behind you rings twice for no reason anyone can name. Mrs Ashdown stands at the edge of the slip with her coat buttoned to the throat, not speaking, watching the grey water as if it owes her money.
The Ada May comes in first, then the Rose Hannah, their running lights swinging through the murk. The Lizzie does not come. In the morning you find the ledger on the counter with two hearts inked dark and one margin left bare, the stamp lying beside it, unwiped, waiting for a boat that has not yet found its way home.
