Bon voyage script and skyline on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown, held together by hands with red nail polish. One forearm carries the words bon voyage in thin black script, while the other has a continuous line drawing of a city skyline, a dotted route, waves and a sun. The linework is fine and unshaded, in black ink on pale skin against a woven wicker background.

Marguerite had drawn the route three times on the back of a ferry ticket before Odile agreed it was right. The dotted line began at the harbour wall in Marseille, bent around the bay, and wandered out past the lighthouse to the sun, which Odile insisted on because her sister had never once in twenty years been able to find the weather in a room.

"You've put the tower in the wrong place," Odile said, tapping the ink with the cap of the biro. "Cathedral's on the left, not the right."
"It's my city. I put it where I remember it."
They sat on the quay with their wrists together, the way they used to sit on the bunk when the boat rocked and neither would admit to being frightened. The bell at the marina rang the half hour. Somewhere behind them a gull was arguing with a bin. Marguerite pressed the pen down and drew the waves, three hard little peaks, then stopped where the line should have gone on. "There," she said. "The rest is yours to finish."
Odile looked at the empty stretch below the last wave for a long time. Then she took the biro, bent over her own forearm, and wrote bon voyage small and slanted above the sea, saying nothing about the ferry that left at six.
