Small star tattoos on three pairs of feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three bare feet rest on a red brick pavement, with the photo cropped so no faces are visible. Each foot carries a small black star tattoo drawn in fine, mostly solid linework, with one cluster near the ankle and others on the top of the foot near the toes. The ink is black against the skin, and the warm red brick and silver toe rings, white and teal nail polish add colour to an otherwise simple, close composition.

Sit closer, you, where the lamp can reach your face. The old road into Maybrook Vale was paved in red brick, and every brick was pressed by hand in the kiln at Thessaly Cross, a place that has never been on any map, so you will have to take my word for it. The bricks stayed warm past midnight, and the people of the Vale said this was because the kiln-keeper pressed a small star into the underside of each one before it went in the fire.

Nobody believed that until the winter the sky over the Vale went out for nine nights. The lamplighter, a widow called Orla Venn, walked the brick road each evening with her tin lantern and found every lamp dark and the lane black as a boot. On the third night she knelt, lifted a brick, and saw a star pressed into its belly, small and sharp, the way a dropped seed sits in soil. She carried it home and set it on her windowsill, and by morning the star had turned to face the north.

So she made a rule. Every household that walked the brick road must mark themselves with a star of their own, inked in a place where the road could feel it, so the stones would know who belonged on them. The children laughed at her. Then the nine nights ended, the lamps flared back to life, and the marks on everyone's feet had kept their shape ever since.

When Orla died the road grew quiet, but the stars still walk the Vale on their own, three pairs at a time, leaving their small dark marks in the dust of every lane, and the lamps have never gone out again.
