Matching small bird tattoos at the nape
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
Two people with dark and light hair are photographed from behind against a pale, hazy sea and sky. Each has a small, simple black bird silhouette at the base of the neck, with solid fill and little visible shading. The image has a warm, faded tone, and the tattoos are the main point of focus.

The cafeteria on the night crossing smelt of burnt milk and diesel, and Dilys Harrow kept her hands flat on the counter so the officer could see they were empty. Her sister Wren stood half a step behind, the two passports stacked on the laminate between them, both of them in the grey cardigans they had bought from a charity shop in Holyhead the summer their mother went into hospital.

The officer, a tired man called Sekou with a biro tucked behind one ear, flicked through the pages without looking up. "Anything to declare?" Dilys said a jar of damson jam, the last from their mother's tree, and Wren said nothing at all. Sekou's eyes moved over the collar of each cardigan and stopped there, as if the small dark shapes beneath the cloth had a question of their own. "What are those?"
"Terns," Dilys said. "We had them done the summer we turned twenty. The man in the shop told us they fly from pole to pole and hardly ever touch land. We thought that was the most romantic thing we had ever heard." Sekou made a noise that might have been a laugh and stamped both pages with a thump that sounded like a door closing somewhere far off.
Outside, the deck rail was slick with spray and the sea was the colour of weak tea. Wren took the jam from Dilys's bag, held it up to the lights, and they watched the gulls peel away behind the wake, one after another, until there were none left to follow. "Keep going," Wren said, and the ship kept going.
