Two women are photographed from behind, each with a small black cross tattoo on the nape of the neck. The cross is drawn with thin, even linework and solid black ink, with no shading or added detail. The image is in black and white, and the two tattoos are similar in size and placement, with the women sitting close together in dark tops and light denim shorts.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came back to Saltery Common the week the swifts did, and the showman's daughters walked the lane between the caravans with ribbons over their wrists so the wind could not take them. Nell was the elder by a winter. Her sister Ada had never once been let through a gate ahead of her.

That spring a tinker called Mosk set his pitch beside the coconut shy and offered a needle and a pot of soot ink to anyone willing to sit still. He had only one design, a cross no longer than a barley grain, and he drew it in a single stroke without lifting the point. Nell sat first because she was bold. Ada sat second because she would not be outdone, and she said the cross had to be the same on both of them or it was no cross at all.

Mosk took his payment in bread and a length of blue ribbon. When the fair struck camp on the Sunday, the two girls walked the lane with their heads bent so the new marks would not rub, and they quarrelled about nothing the whole way to the bridge. At the crossroads by the lock they stopped, because the cart wheels had to turn one way and their feet the other.

Nell looked back at her sister, and Ada looked back at her, and each saw the small black mark the other carried and could not see for herself. They went on together, one at either side of the road, and from that day neither of them walked ahead.
