Black and grey photo of a small cross tattoo with the script inscription John 13:7 beside it, placed on the back of a neck.

Cross and John 13:7 script on the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black Latin cross sits centrally on the back of the neck, with the script words John 13:7 written diagonally alongside its lower arm. The cross has bold, even strokes, while the script uses thinner, flowing lines with a soft shadow of grey. The plain skin and dark blurred background keep the focus on the tattoo, shown in black ink only.

Dear Win,

You will laugh when you hear what Mr Ashdown did on Saturday. The Palais on Clarendon Street was still full of talc and spilt lemonade when the last waltz finished, and while the rest of us were fighting over coats, he knelt at the edge of the floor with a bucket of hot water and a flannel, and started on the boys who had stayed behind to smoke by the fire escape. He wasn't scolding them. He just took their shoes off one at a time and washed the dust from their feet, as if it were the most ordinary job in the world.

Donald Pryce, who has never had a kind word for anyone, went red to the ears and said he would do it himself. Mr Ashdown only shook his head and said, "You won't see the sense of it tonight, son. Give it time."

Afterwards I walked home past St Mary's, where the noticeboard still has the same verse pinned under a faded Lent poster. John thirteen, seven. I stood under the streetlamp working it out: what he was doing, we would not understand now, but we would understand afterwards. I used to think that was a riddle for the vicar to puzzle over.

Now I think Mr Ashdown was telling us the floor would be cleaned by someone willing to kneel, and that we would only see it once we were the ones dancing on clean boards without a thought for who had knelt there. Write back and tell me what you make of it. I am keeping the bucket by the door for when the Friday crowd comes in muddy.

Love, Edie
