The map was already soft at the folds when Maud pressed it flat on the Morris's bonnet, weighted at the corners with a tin of barley sugar and a hairgrip. Irene uncapped the biro with her teeth. 'Dashed,' she said. 'The road's not sure of itself up there, so we shouldn't be either.'

They had driven up the Sorrel Pass in second gear for three hours, and in all that time the road had folded back on itself eleven times. Each hairpin was a small looping argument with the mountain. Maud tallied them on the dashboard with a nail file, and Irene drew the dashes between them, a little gap for every bend, so the route ran off the paper like stitching.
The last loop was the one that mattered. It came at the top, where a café with a crooked sign sold tea in tin mugs to lorry drivers who had given up on the descent. Irene drew the final turn, and then, where the line had to come back to the beginning, she stopped and pressed harder, filling a small dot until it was black as a seed.
'That's where we are,' she said. 'That's the heart of it, the bit that doesn't go anywhere.'
Maud laughed and took the pen. She wrote the same mark in the margin of the map, very small, so they would always know which way they had come.
