Matching small spark tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two arms are held together, with a small red stick and black spark lines tattooed on each inner forearm, placed to match. The fine linework is crisp and the red fill is solid. On the left arm, a larger coloured tattoo of red roses and green leaves extends up the forearm, and the warm film-style photograph has a muted urban rooftop background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dermot came up the back stairs of the flats on Cable Street with a paper bag of onions and a tin of kitchen matches, because the boiler had died for the third week running and the gas ring was all they had left. Nell took the tin off him at the door and tipped it onto the draining board to count. Fourteen. She said that wouldn't see them through February, and he said it would if they were careful, which was the kind of thing he said when he wanted to be proved right later.

They fried the onions with the lid on and ate them standing up, the window fogged white, and afterwards they climbed the iron ladder to the roof because the landing was too narrow for two people and a wireless. The tar was soft under their boots. Below them the buses ground along the main road and somebody's radio was playing the same dance tune it had played all week. Dermot struck a match and held it up so she could see his face, then shook it out before it reached his fingers and said the trick was to stop a thing before it got too hot to hold.

Nell took the tin from his pocket and struck the last match herself. It caught on the first try, which felt like a sign, and she held it between them while the flame climbed and the red head burned down to a black stub. Neither of them wanted to be the one to blow it out. When it finally went, the roofs of the whole street were dark except for the glow of one window across the way, and Dermot said that was somebody else's fire, and she said it could be theirs too, if they were careful.
