Matching soundwave tattoos on two wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each carrying a small, matching soundwave design in solid black ink. The waveform has a dense central peak that tapers into thin lines at both ends. The ink is crisp and dark against warm skin, and the tattoos sit level with each other in a close, centred crop against a pale tiled background.

The fog came in off Scarrow Sands on the Tuesday, thick as wet wool, and Edith Pell stood on the lighthouse gallery with her uncle's wax cylinder machine strapped to the rail. Eleven minutes was all the drum would hold. She spent them on the horn, working the lever whenever the keeper below rang the bell, and she did not once look at the sea.

Tom was aboard the coaster Marigold that night, somewhere out past the Dogger, and he had written asking for a sound he could carry home. Edith packed the cylinder in a tin with a cork round it and posted it north. When it reached him, a man at the Grimsby docks traced the scratched line off the wax onto paper, and Tom wrote back that it looked like a mountain range drawn in a hurry: a fat black hump in the middle, tapering to threads at either end.

When he came home in April he took her to that same man, a quiet fellow with a shop above a chandler's, who inked the line onto the inside of each of their wrists in ink as dark as the fog had been. The inker asked which of them owned the original. Tom laughed and said it made no difference, because the horn sounded the same whichever one you listened from.

That evening they sat on the sea wall with their hands pressed together, and the two marks lined up exactly, peak to peak. Edith listened for the bell from the rock. The sky was clear and the water flat, and still she heard it.
