Matching soundwave tattoos on two wrists
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a small, solid black tattoo of a waveform. The waveform is a central peak with tapering spikes on either side, drawn as dense silhouette shading rather than fine lines. The ink is black on skin with a warm, slightly soft photographic tone, and the two tattoos mirror each other in size and position.

The ship Marrow Gull had been eleven weeks out of Hull when the cook's boy, Tobias Penhale, began to hum the same tune at every watch change. Nobody minded at first. The sea makes its own noise, and a man learns to sleep through the groan of timber and the slap of water under the bow.

His brother Aled was aboard too, on the far side of the rope locker, scraping salt from the rigging. They had quarrelled in Bristol over a debt nobody could remember. Tobias had signed on out of spite and Aled out of plain need, and neither had spoken since the bar at the Grapes. But the humming carried through the planks, and Aled caught himself tapping his thumb against the rail to keep time with it.
On the night the wind went round to the west, the lamp swung wild and the bosun called all hands to the foredeck. Tobias was thrown against the capstan and his wrist came down hard across the iron. In the dark, Aled heard the tune stop mid-phrase. He crawled the length of the deck on his knees, calling his brother's name, and found Tobias holding his wrist still, humming the rest of the phrase through his teeth so Aled could follow the sound back to him.
They set the bones at dawn with a belaying pin and a strip of sailcloth. That winter Aled pricked the shape of the tune onto his own wrist with a cheap needle and a jar of soot, a dark peak with long tapering tails, and Tobias did the same on his, so that whenever either lifted a hand to a rope or a cup, the mark showed. Tobias said it looked like a tide chart. Aled said it looked like a voice. Neither of them ever sang it aloud again.
