Repeated script word in a wave line on arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine-line tattoo runs horizontally across the skin, with a repeated script word that rises and falls like a heartbeat trace. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The tattoo fills the middle of the frame against a dark teal background.

The needle on the drum had been drawing the same loop since before the tea urn was filled, and Maud Tregarthen insisted the sea was only breathing. I kept the log at the seismograph house above Porthleven, a brass-cornered room that smelled of paraffin and wet wool. Every night at two I changed the paper and wrote the hour in pencil in the margin.

That winter the trace began to repeat itself. Not in words, since the instruments were not that clever, but the pen kept running the same rise and fall, rise and fall, until the line looked like handwriting a child had been told to copy over and over. Maud said it was a ghost of a tremor. I said it was the iron gate on the coastguard lane knocking in the wind. We argued for three weeks, and neither of us went to look.
On the nineteenth night I took the lamp down the path myself. Nothing moved but the gorse and a single gull asleep on the rail. Back in the room the paper was still turning, and the pen had recorded my own footsteps: a small, quick, certain pattern, the same shape the ground had been writing all month. I pinned that sheet to the wall above the urn, where it still hangs, and Maud has never once asked me what it says.
