Treble clef and heartbeat line on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black treble clef flows into a heartbeat trace that runs horizontally across the skin, with three sharp spikes of varying height. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The design sits on a pale inner forearm against a dark background, with the clef on the left and the trace extending to the right.

Dear Tom,

The hut warden says the pass will hold until Thursday, so I have time to write properly, which I never do with a pen. Your mother will tell you the stove's been smoking. It has. I have sat with my back against the wall for two evenings, listening to the wind try the shutters, and thinking about the paper you sent me with the clef you drew in the margin.
You asked why the clef looks like a tadpole that has swallowed a bell. Your grandfather used to say it was a G that had curled up to keep warm. He sang in the chapel choir at Glenderry for forty years and never once read a note off the page, he knew the shapes. When the doctor in Fort William strapped the wires to his chest that last winter, the monitor drew a line across the screen that looked, to me, like a hymn written by someone in a hurry. Three big peaks, a rest, then another. I sat there counting them out like verses.
Put the clef and the spikes side by side and you have what he would have called a tune. I will not pretend it was a comfort. But on the way up this morning the path ran beside a stream, and every time it dropped over a stone the water made a three-note fall that I swear was in the key of the chapel organ.
Practise the scale I sent. Don't hurry the top.
Love, Nan
