Matching state outline tattoos with red hearts
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a thin black outline of a US state and a small red heart shape placed at the edge of the outline, so the two designs appear to mirror each other. The linework is fine and even with solid black lines, and the red hearts provide the only colour against the skin tone. The composition is a close, straight-on view of both arms with the tattoos centred in the frame.

The ferry was already sliding off the Pennsylvania bank when Nell Varley came down the mud at a run, a folded survey sheet clamped under one arm. Her brother Thomas had inked the boundary that morning with a steady hand, then sent her to fetch the second copy from the inn. She had found the inn shut and the sheet in the wrong pocket, and by the time she reached the landing the boatman was already shouting for the rope.

Hob Prentice, who ran the crossing, leaned out and caught her wrist. He had carried her across every market day since she was small, and he did not ask what was in the paper. He only asked which shore she meant to be on by nightfall. She told him she did not know yet, and the river went brown and quick around the hull as they drifted towards the middle, where the two colonies pressed together and nobody agreed where one stopped.
Halfway over she unfolded the chart on her knee. Thomas had drawn the Pennsylvania side square and plain, all straight edges, and the New Jersey side with its crooked coast like a dropped glove. Beside the river she had dabbed a small red wax heart on each bank, a foolish thing she had done the night before while he slept. Now she saw the two hearts sat a finger's width apart, the paper between them bare.
Hob watched her fold the sheet back up. Well, he said, and set the pole against the stones. The ferry bumped the New Jersey landing. Nell stepped off, pressed the second heart against the first, and let the wax smear red across the river, so that the two halves of the map became one thing for as long as the ink held.
