Matching state outline tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms sit side by side, each carrying an outline tattoo of the US state of New Hampshire in thin black linework. A small solid red heart is placed near the south-eastern edge of each outline, and the two designs appear to match. The skin is evenly lit against a dark background, with a hand and dark nail polish visible at the top of the frame.

The tracing paper had torn twice before Ada pinned the third sheet over the atlas and told her brother to stop breathing on it. Their mother's copy had lost its cover years ago, and the state of New Hampshire had slid out of the binding looking like a boot somebody had left out in the rain. Ada wanted the line exact. Tomas wanted it finished before the bus to Concord left without them.

They had argued about the heart all week. Their grandfather always said the real heart of the state sat low on the right, where the coast gave up and the mill towns began, so Ada put the red pen there. Tomas said that was Portsmouth, and Portsmouth was a harbour with a parking problem, not a heart. Ada said hearts were supposed to be inconvenient. She drew it anyway, a small lopsided thing, and blew on it until it dried.
They traced the outline onto each other's forearms with a biro that smelt of cherry, pressing hard so it would last the summer. Tomas went south the next year and Ada stayed on the hill farm, and they wrote on the backs of postcards that neither of them could ever quite fold right. Every letter ended with the same instruction: check the heart is still where you left it.
Eleven winters later the ink under her skin has settled to a grey blue, and the heart has spread a little at its edges like a stain on blotting paper. Ada never told Tomas that she had put it in the wrong place on purpose, a few miles from where their grandfather said it belonged. She reckoned a heart that was easy to find would never bring anyone home.
