Skull and cherry blossoms on a foot
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A grey-shaded human skull sits on the top of a foot, partly covered by clusters of pink cherry blossom flowers with yellow stamens. The skull is rendered with soft tonal shading and the flowers have bold outlines and flat pink fills. The tattoo is shown against a plain black background with the toes visible below.

The digger found the skull in August, while my father was clearing a drain along the old Morello row. It sat in the clay between two roots like a pale bowl someone had forgotten to wash. Nobody in the village would touch it, so Dad wrapped it in a feed sack and asked me to carry it up to the vicarage before the light went. I was twelve and rather proud of being trusted with something so grim.

Mr Abbott took one look inside the sack and went quiet. He knew the orchard's history better than anyone, and he told me what my grandfather had always said about those trees: that every April the whole valley turned pink because the cherries were showing off for whoever lay beneath them. Grandfather said it as a joke. Mr Abbott did not laugh.
When we unwrapped the skull properly in the vestry, there was a brass hair slide tangled in the jaw, stamped with a little five-petalled flower and the initials A.L. Mr Abbott found the names in the parish book the next morning: Ada Loveridge, a picker from the Land Army hostel, reported missing in the summer of 1944. Nobody had come looking for her beyond a single notice in the paper.
We buried her that October in the corner by the wall, under a young Stella cherry that Dad grafted himself. I pressed the last of that year's fruit into the soil with my thumb, because it seemed the least I could do. By the following spring the whole corner was white, and the bees kept coming back to it long after the rest of the orchard had gone quiet.
